GENERAL INFORMATION

Students are encouraged to obtain a uniform and protective gear from the academy ASAP after their first 6 weeks basic training is completed. All clothing and equipment has a limited guarantee. NON ACADEMY equipment/clothing is not permitted to be worn by members. Our equipment has been designed specifically for your needs and the quality is of the highest standard. Cheap, inferior gloves are a danger to you and your fellow student and therefore not accepted at all!

Your grade belt is to be worn at all times in class. Class registers and payments are kept up to date on a daily basis and is controlled by one person ensuring accurate book keeping at all times. Receipts are only issued upon request so if you need it for tax purposes then please ensure you inform your instructor. With regards to the contact issue the rules are simple and explained in detail in this document. The most important point to understand clearly is that excessive contact will not be tolerated at all! The motto of the Academy is that we are here to train with one another and not against each other.

ABOUT RANKING / GRADING

You will notice Prodigy members wearing different coloured belts. Originally there was no ranking system other than student and teacher. While in reality there are no degrees to put one student above another, there is a ranking system used at the Dojo which is for instructional designation. These belts are to measure the progress of each student and mark that progress with a rank.

Rank, you must not forget, is merely a measuring device - a symbol - don’t get lost in it. Rank is not only awarded to a student’s technical knowledge but to a student’s spirit, attitude, character, commitment, bravery, discipline and humility. Ranks are awarded during formal testing procedure (grading), although we feel a student is always being tested internally and externally during each class session.

Out of respect for your instructor, fellow classmates and the time and energy you have devoted to your training, testing should be taken very seriously. Take time to prepare yourself both physically and mentally for your test. Handle your dues and fees prior to the day of testing so that you can devote your full attention to the test. Your rank is a gift from you instructor to reward you for your commitment. It is also a gift to your instructor because he has realized his knowledge has successfully been passed on and preserved. Gradings are compulsory for all members!

FRUSTRATION

In the beginning and during your training there will be times it becomes very frustrating. This is normal. Frustration simply means that you do not yet have the skill to effectively deal with the situation. Another reason for feeling frustration is a lack of patience with the unfamiliarity of the subject. Frustration also is a tool. On the positive side, it tells you that you simply need to continue working out the solution.
